Since 2018, PDS Organization has been implementing Small Scale Businesses (SSB) programs as part of its commitment to community development, entrepreneurship, and sustainable employment in Zanzibar. Guided by the motto “Jobs creation is our priority,” the program encourages people to become creators of employment opportunities rather than depending solely on existing employers to provide jobs.
The SSB program supports individuals and community members who have an idea, skill, or interest that can be transformed into a small and sustainable business. Through practical guidance, capacity building, mentoring, and hands-on participation, PDS helps participants explore opportunities and develop initiatives that can generate income while contributing to the local economy.
The program can cover different stages of developing a small business, including identifying a business idea, planning, market research, sourcing materials, developing products or services, improving business skills, marketing, and establishing day-to-day operations. The exact level of involvement depends on the needs of each project and the available resources.
Possible Activities
- Teaching and Training: Train the SSB students and assist the local teachers in delivering the SSB classes.
- Production Process: Join the local community in the production of a variety of items (clothes, homemade products…)
- Marketing and Microfinance Lessons: Help the SSB students to promote, advertise and financially manage their new born businesses.
- Computer lessons: Teach computer science to the SSB students.
- Quality Control: Give trainings about quality control to help the community to have good quality products.
- Partnership: Help us to find partners to develop and fund the SSB programs.
- Visits of small businesses: Visit small businesses owners graduated from PDS and advise them on what they can improve. Note: Volunteers can even work with them and help them to develop their business.
